El Junco Lagoon Tour
The only freshwater lagoon in Galápagos
The experience
In the heart of the San Cristóbal highlands, the El Junco crater holds the only permanent freshwater lagoon in the entire archipelago. Its 270 metres across fill with frigatebirds that come to rinse the salt from their feathers.
The walk around the crater rim offers panoramic views over the whole island and the ocean, among ferns, miconia and highland birds. It is combined with stops at the Galapaguera and Puerto Chino, depending on the day's version.
Bathing frigatebirds
A one-of-a-kind sight: frigatebirds wheeling in circles and diving to wash themselves in fresh water.
A 360° view of the island
From the crater rim on clear days you look out over the whole of San Cristóbal and the Pacific.
Green highlands
A misty ecosystem entirely unlike the coast: ferns, miconia and endemic birds.
