Sulphur Mines Tour
Trekking to the yellow fumaroles
The experience
Inside the Sierra Negra volcanic complex, the Sulphur Mines are one of the least visited and most striking corners of Isabela: active fumaroles that have stained the rock a vivid yellow in the middle of the caldera.
This is a demanding, remote trek, designed for anyone after extreme volcanic landscapes away from the crowds: lava fields, secondary craters and mineral deposits in unreal colours.
Active sulphur fumaroles
Get close (safely) to the volcanic vents that release steam and have crystallised bright yellow sulphur.
A route without the crowds
A long, little-used trail: it is common not to meet another group all day.
Geology in action
Your guide interprets the volcano's activity, the minerals and the eruptive history of Sierra Negra.
